A mother-of-one who shoplifted a designer handbag worth nearly €2,000 from a department store has been jailed for six months.

Ellavita Flynn (29) was sentenced after she also admitted stealing glasses and cosmetics at other city centre shops.

Flynn, with an address at Mercer House in the north inner city, pleaded guilty to charges including the theft of a Givenchy handbag worth €1,950.

Dublin District Court heard she went to Brown Thomas on August 9 this year, took the bag and left without paying. She was identified on CCTV and later arrested, but the property was never recovered.

Separately, she stole four pairs of glasses worth a combined €1,000 from a Vision Express store on September 2. She was again identified on CCTV and the glasses were not recovered.

In another incident, she took €165 of products from Boots in the Ilac Centre and put them in her bag, but was stopped when the security alarm went off. She was arrested for being highly intoxicated and unable to walk unaided in Boots on August 29.

On another occasion, Flynn was found with €128 worth of stolen clothing on her when she was arrested for being intoxicated in public.

The accused had 65 previous convictions. Ms Flynn had a “particularly difficult background” and had been abusing crack cocaine, her barrister Ciara Murray said.

She was currently serving a sentence and trying to deal with that issue. Sentencing Ms Flynn, Judge Bryan Smyth backdated the prison term to early November.
