Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 was the big winner today as it scooped the overall title of Car of the Year for 2024.
There were also big wins for Nissan, MG, Renault, BMW, Ford, Mercedes and newcomer BYD at the ceremony, which was sponsored by Continental Tyres for the tenth year running.
Journalists from the Motor Media Association of Ireland congregated at the Conrad Hotel in Dublin and awarded ten separate awards at the motor industry’s biggest event, which also included Irish Van of the Year and a special Service to the Industry award.
The MG4 won the Small Compact Car of the Year 2024
The MG4 won the Small Compact Car of the Year ahead of the Volkswagen e-up! and the Ora Funky Car.
Before the winning the overall prize the Ioniq 6 from Hyundai won Medium/Large Car of the Year ahead of the Peugeot 408, the Toyota Prius and the very impressive new Citroën e-C4x.
BYD's Atto 3 was announced as the winner of the Compact SUV of the Year
New car brand BYD was announced as the winner of the Compact SUV of the Year with their utterly brilliant Atto 3. The new arrival pipped the latest Jeep Avenger, the Hyundai Kona, the Toyota Corolla Cross and the BMW X1.
The Medium SUV category was won by the new Renault Austral
The Medium SUV category was another tightly contested competition with the new Renault Austral winning out over the Mercedes GLC, Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra.
The Large SUV award was won by the Nissan X-Trail
The Large SUV category had six contenders and the Nissan X-Trail won out over the Mercedes EQE SUV, the Mazda CX-60, the INEOS Grenadier, the Lexus RX and the Maxus MIFA 9.
Performance Car of the Year was won by the BMW M2
The hotly-contested Performance Car of the Year was won by the bonkers-fast BMW M2 who beat the Kia EV6 GT, the Audi RS 3 and the Polestar 2 BST.
Luxury Car of the Year was won by the BMW i7
And the Luxury Car of the Year was won by the BMW i7 which beat its stablemate the XM, the Audi Q8 e-tron, the Mercedes EQS SUV and the Maserati Grecale.
Van of the Year Award went to the Mercedes Citan
Awards were also handed out for the coveted Van of the Year Award with the overall gong going to Mercedes Citan. Earlier in the day the Ford Raptor won the Commercial SUV award over the VW Amarok, INEOS Grenadier and the Maxus T-90.

There was also an award on the day for ‘Service to the Industry’ which was handed out to Denise Harris of the Harris Group.
But the night belonged to Hyundai as they won the big one and have bragging rights over their peers for the next 12 months.
